Ouverture

Artist Blog by Valerio Polici

Initially commissioned by the Napoli Teatro Festival Foundation and later completed during the Roma Europa Festival, Ouverture is a project that portrays the spectators before the beginning of the show.

It takes the shape of a reversal of meaning, in which the public becomes the protagonist of a hypothetical, ambiguous, and unlocatable performance. Consistent with my photographic practice, I have placed emphasis on the moment before the salient action in a given context. I am fascinated by how much potential the unexpressed can create disorientation and set in motion a strong imaginative machine in the viewer.

The title is also a homage to the opening scene of Ingmar Bergman's “The Magic Flute”.
