Artist Blog by Marzena Abrahamik

Yearbook, is an ongoing collaboration with Chicago Public High Schools’ students as extracurricular programming to support schools with depleting arts education, organized by CPS Lives, an artist residency. I started photographing at Young Women’s Leadership Charter School in Douglas, an all girls school that closed in the Spring of 2019 and have continued the collaboration with Michele Clark Academic Magnet High School students in Austin. The project focuses on the construction of a fictitious Yearbook. Rooted in art and community, the project intends to have lasting communal, civic and social impact. By fusing relationships to academic and artistic institutions, the project broadens students’ artistic, historical, and cultural knowledge base at global and local levels. I hope to increase awareness of geographic, social, and economic differences while celebrating individuality as a historic archive for and about Chicago neighborhoods. The sports teams photographs are made in collaboration with Justin Schmitz.
