La Romana

Artist Feature of Miguel Mira

La Romana focuses on the depopulation of interior Spain and the marginalized people it leaves behind. The abandonment of village life deeply affects rural areas of Spain today. The migration of the younger generation to larger cities leaves behind an older population in small towns making their way of living nearly obsolete. This problem stems from the rise of capitalism, postmodernity, and the disproportionate growth of modern technology. The images in this series capture the strength and vulnerability of those living in these rural communities and their complacency in their environment.
