Der Greif 15th Anniversary Events From Munich to Arles

Article

For the first time since its founding 15 years ago, Der Greif cooperated with the Pinakothek der Moderne for an interactive photography installation. From June 16-18, 2023, we welcomed many hundreds of visitors to our anniversary weekend in Munich, which culminated at ZIRKA with image screenings from the impressive Greif archive and submissions from the recent “Past & Present” Open Call. To attend our next anniversary projection, join us at Les Rencontres d’Arles for the opening week’s Nuit de L’Année on Saturday, July 8.

Der Greif at Les Rencontres d'Arles Nuit de L'Année

Papeteries Étienne, Arles (France), 8 July 2023, 08.00 PM - 03.00 AM

Featuring 275 Artists from all over the world, we will present a meditative dive into a selection of our vast archive from the past 15 years and images selected from the recent “Past & Present” Open Call. As part of Les Rencontres d’Arles Nuit de L'Année, which takes place every year during the photography festival’s opening week, forty photographic proposals will be projected in loops onto large screens at the abandoned industrial site of the former Étienne paper mill. Our projection will celebrate Der Greif’s anniversary with a 15-minute long video slideshow containing six chapters. The images will come together to form new narratives through their juxtaposition, reflecting on all that we have achieved with our community over the last 15 years. Bringing together some of the festival’s favorite photographs, projects, and institutions, this great celebration of photography will feature performances, concerts, and DJ sets, with food trucks and bars on site. Celebrating “Past & Present” in Munich

Located on the east side of the Pinakothek der Moderne, Pavillon 333 opened its doors for the collaborative project “Contextualize” from June 16-18, 2023. Visitors were able to access parts of the Greif archive as well as submissions from the last Open Call on the topic of “Past & Present” and had the opportunity to freely arrange and rearrange the image material. In this way, new visual narratives emerged from the combination of submissions and individual images from the past 15 years, making visible or questioning the process of interpretation and knowledge production. Munich-based authors Mira Mann and Angela Aux responded to the results with poetry in the form of texts and public readings. At the end of each day, the image cards could be taken home by visitors for a small donation. The proceeds will go to the Der Greif Guest Room Scholarship and thus directly benefit the artists. On Saturday evening, June 17, our celebrations continued at ZIRKA in Munich’s Kreativquartier. While the evening started outside in the ZIRKA courtyard with food, drinks, and sunny music, visitors headed inside at 9 PM, where image screenings from the impressive Greif archive and submissions from the recent “Past & Present” Open Call were accompanied by musical showcases. Legendary (quasi-)jazz label Squama Recordings hosted Mongolian jazz singer Enji and artist Zylva, before the club night kicked off with local DJ, promoter and radio host lu.wicked. The hightlight of the night was our guests from London, DJs Errol and Alex Rita of Touching Bass, who took over until the sun came up again.
