Curiosity, criticality, artifice and reverence for the natural world appear throughout Torbjørn Rødland’s work and often in the same image, forging links between twentieth-century art photography and twenty-first-century approaches to image-making.
For Issue 17, Der Greif and Rødland launched an open call titled "One Day Soon," focusing on the dynamic relationship between technology, culture, and the photographic medium. Rødland's vision sought to push the boundaries of photography in response to the growing influence of generative AI, moving beyond traditional notions of subjective documentation and venturing into uncharted creative territories.
To celebrate the release of Der Greif 17, we’re hosting four special launch events from Los Angeles to Tokyo, passing through Munich and Paris. Join us on October 26th for a special evening celebrating the Los Angeles stop of the Der Greif Issue 17 launch tour at Webber Gallery, in collaboration with MACK and Webber Gallery. Between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, you’ll have the opportunity to meet Rødland and be among the first to receive the brand-new issue "One Day Soon." Rødland will be available for signings, and his thoughtful curation of 90 selected works will offer a fascinating glimpse into what lies ahead for contemporary image-making. Next, we’re back at Super BOOKS in Munich on November 2nd and 3rd. Haus der Kunst once again hosts the renowned annual independent art publishing fair that brings together artists, designers, publishers, institutions, and universities to present their latest productions. We couldn’t miss out on our annual Parisian stop: we’re thrilled to announce that Der Greif will be part of the Paris Photo Media Program at the newly renovated Grand Palais this year! On November 7, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM, we’ll be launching Issue 17 at the collective booth/kiosk in the north media lounge. Stay tuned for the announcement of another special event we’re planning during Paris Photo – more details coming soon! Last but not least, Der Greif 17 will see its first public presentation in Tokyo at Zero, a newly opened art gallery dedicated to photography and books. The opening reception is on November 16 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The pop-up show will then be on view until 23 on weekends from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on weekdays by appointment only. For those unable to attend any of the events, you can pre-order Issue 17 via our online shop and receive it just hot off the press!
