“Auf nach Woanders” ("Off to Elsewhere") is the title of the 2024/25 season of the Münchner Kammerspiele (MK:), which was inaugurated on September 14th with a photo exhibition in their foyer at Therese-Giehse-Halle. “Auf nach Woanders” stems from the call opened by Der Greif to its worldwide community of photography enthusiasts to get a chance to be featured as both the image campaign for the 2024/25 season, as a photo exhibition, and in a special art publication by both organizations.
From the multitude of contributions, Çağla Ilk, co-director of the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden and curator of the German Pavilion at this year's Venice Biennale, selected 40 images that “are rooted in places somewhere on this planet, stretching any geographic limitation of the 25 different countries they stem from,” Der Greif Artistic Co-Director Dr. Caroline von Courten writes in the publication's introductory essay. İlk was invited by Der Greif and MK: as a guest curator for this open call. Since 2020, she has been co-directing the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden with Misal Adnan Yıldız. İlk works in theory and practice at the intersection of visual arts, architecture, sound, theater, and performance. She uses dramaturgy as a method of curating and integrates transdisciplinary approaches into her curatorial practice. Instead of static forms of exhibition-making, she pursues the idea of working with events and installations that change and make transitions visible.
The cooperation between Der Greif’s community of diverse creatives from around the world and MK: brings to the public – both local and global – a contemporary look into the world of theater: one capable of merging imagined and real worlds, public space and personal visions, staged and unstaged events.
The exhibition, poster campaign and photographic publication see 40 artists selected by Ilk: Alvin Ng, AnaHell, Anna Pentzlin, Anqi Li, Armin Amirian, Berk Kır, Camilla Gorini, Chloé Milos Azzopardi, Christian Nicolay, Cyriaco Lopes, Elena Paraskeva, Ernesto Solana, Fenqiang Liu, Florian Luthi, Forrest Simmons, Giacomo Tazzini, Grzegorz Piotrowski, Hannah Woolf, Igor Schiller, Inna Piskun, Jinchun Wei, Julia Walk, Lars Borges, Lê Quyên Nguyễn, Lisa Großkopf, Marco Castelli, Marvin Zilm, Mehdi Moghimnejad, Melanie Schoeniger, Milena Villalón, Oliver Kartak, Paul Hiller, Samet Durgun, Sári Zagyvai, Saxon Baird, Stepan Chubaev, Sveta Kaverina, Tino Kukulies, Yolanda Y. Liou and Zita Frohloff.
People were welcomed with guided tours through the workshops to delve deep into the artists’ artworks and MK:’s workspaces. The images were subsequently transported from the workshops into Therese-Giehse-Halle through a performance. The foyer is going to be the stage of this special exhibition for three months, which stands as a visual bridge between the city theater and interpretations of “elsewhere” from around the world.
VARIOUS OTHERS celebrated their official closing part joining forces with Der Greif and MK:. As the exhibition performance wrapped up, the night continued with a vibrant mix of live performances and DJ sets by Valentin.SNC & Voe and Sianza, bringing the perfect blend of culture and nightlife to Munich.
