Photography at Various Others 2024

Article

The seventh edition of VARIOUS OTHERS aims to enhance the international atmosphere of Munich's art scene. Starting on September 5, 2024, Munich is preparing for its most extensive and diverse VARIOUS OTHERS program yet, featuring over 30 openings and a variety of events including receptions, performances, parties, and concerts.

VARIOUS OTHERS is a distinctive and international format within Munich's art scene. Since its establishment in 2017, it has become a cornerstone of the city's artistic community, showcasing its diversity and promoting international exchange. This initiative thrives on collaboration, uniting 17 galleries, 16 institutions, and 5 Artist Run Spaces from Munich, as well as international guest galleries, curators, and artists.

Photography fans should head straight for “Rineke Dijkstra. The Krazy House” at Espace Louis Vuitton München. For its 15th exhibition within the framework of the Hors-les-murs programme of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Espace Louis Vuitton München is proud to present Dijkstra’s works from the Collection at the Espaces Louis Vuitton in Tokyo, Munich, Venice, Beijing, Seoul and Osaka. Also look out for Andreas Gursky’s works in the context of the first major retrospective on Dutch fashion artists Viktor&Rolf in Germany, presented by the Kunsthalle München.

The programme is enriched by the exhibitions "Key Operators. Weaving and Coding as Languages of Feminist Historiography" at Kunstverein München and "Tracing Echoes: From Westerwald to Rio Tinto," curated by Lena von Geyso at Kunstraum München. The former focuses on the connections between feminized labor, technological advancements, and the languages associated with them. It features works by various artists and media, including Pati Hills, Charlotte Johanneson, and Lotus L. Kang, who engage with the concept of weaving while acknowledging image culture and its modern technological advancements. On the other hand, von Geyso's curated exhibition showcases the multidisciplinary works of Anne Quirynen and Sandra Schäfer. They skillfully blend documentary and technically edited images to craft a compelling visual narrative. Their work explores the impact of technology and capitalism on agriculture, science, and their portrayal. Throughout their exploration, they delve into the nuances of gender inequality, the influence of artificial intelligence on physical labor, and delve into questions of social justice.

At this year’s Various Others, Nebyula is collaborating with Berlin-based Eigen+Art Lab, to present the project "Resilience: Pleasure and Self-Care in a Precarious World." This exhibition showcases the work of a new generation of South African artists, namely Thandiwe Msebenzi, Sethembile Msezane, and Cazlynne Peffer, who are exploring and challenging social norms. The overarching photographic narrative of the exhibition celebrates resilience, self-care, unconditional love, and empowerment. It serves as a platform for discussion, addressing topics such as trauma, mental health, and the political implications of care work.

For those who still haven’t seen the Pinakothek der Moderne photography exhibition “Abstract Horizons”, you still have a chance until September 8th to do so and delve deeper into the works of photographers Geraldine Frisch, Magdalena Jetelová, and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Last but not least, as part of VO Special exhibition “Carrying the Earth to the Sky”, photographs by Munich-based artist Anna McCarthy are going to be part of the show curated by Magdalena Wisniowska, which brings together 13 Munich-based artists, that were nominated by the members of VARIOUS OTHERS and selected by an international jury.

To mark the end of this year's VARIOUS OTHERS and the start of the new season, the Kammerspiele München is presenting an exhibition in their workshops and the Therese-Giehse-Halle foyer. Curated by Çagla Ilk in collaboration with Der Greif, the exhibition presents a carefully selected collection of visual works. Under the title "Auf nach Woanders," it brings together visual and performing arts, as well as scenes from Munich. This evening functions as both the closing party for VARIOUS OTHERS and the launch of the new season for Münchner Kammerspiele and Der Greif.
