Since December 2022, I have been working on the Tasvir Archive in collaboration with fellow Iranian scholar and artist, Sara Abbaspour.
This is an extensive, nonprofit project focused on the history of image-based art and photographic practices in Iran. The archive gathers critical information on Iranian photographers, image-based artists, scholarly articles, and analyses. (The project is currently in progress.) It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, writers, and students interested in Iranian photography. Recently, we co-curated two exhibitions at Northlight Gallery and Step Gallery at Arizona State University.
“The Tasvir Archive was established to address the need for transparency and accessibility in Iranian image-based art. It serves as an archival initiative dedicated to the meticulous collection, categorization, and production of reliable information. The archive empowers researchers, scholars, and students to conduct their studies with greater clarity and a broader perspective that critically engages with the current and urgent conditions of our time. By fostering critical engagement with contemporary issues and addressing the historical aesthetics of suppression, the Tasvir Archive seeks to reinterpret our understanding of Iranian image-based art. It is imperative to us that alternative and progressive narratives replace those that are limited, repressive, and censored.”
