Strom

Artist Blog by Justus Lemm

Strom explores the Oder River habitat through the lens of change. Spanning approximately 854 kilometers (531 miles), the Oder flows through the Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany, originating in the Sudetes Mountains and emptying into the Baltic Sea. Serving as a natural border between Poland and Germany for much of its length, the river is a vital waterway for trade and transportation. It is also home to diverse ecosystems that support a variety of wildlife and plant species.

The name “Oder translates roughly to “the river that constantly changes its course,” reflecting not only the natural shifts in its path but also the profound impacts of human activity. This project delves into the consequences of this relationship, highlighting the river's struggle against climate change and its diminishing capacity to sustain healthy ecosystems.

The urgency of this issue was starkly illustrated in August 2022, when over 10 tons of dead fish washed up along the riverbanks, marking an ecological disaster that shocked both scientists and policymakers. This event serves as a frightening reminder of the challenges facing the Oder and rivers worldwide, underscoring the critical need for awareness and action in the face of environmental change.
