This Is How I Remember

Artist Blog by Haohui Liu

In this series of works, the artist enlarges the negatives onto photographic paper and then processes the paper using alternative techniques. What he pursues is not just a representation of the fading of memories, but a deeper exploration and presentation of the selective nature of memory. The combination of this process with the act of photography is an attempt by the artist to express the dissolution, fixation, and derivation of memory.

Deliberate alterations made to these photographs resemble the way memories fade and distort over time. As the “etched” historical context is reappropriated, it reflects the disintegration of memory, with the remnants of the images becoming relics of once vivid moments. This is a visual exploration of the instability of memory, as well as an experimental attempt by the artist to express the ephemeral nature of the passage of time through the language of images.
