Asteroid 2009 FJ1

Artist Feature of Clara Marconato

We have grown accustomed to accepting the existence of phenomena that elude our full understanding. Space, in particular, remains a frontier beyond our complete comprehension: its scale and boundaries remain elusive not only to the general public but even to scientists. Despite remarkable advances, we have yet to grasp the true magnitude of the cosmos and its indeterminate limits. This prompts me to ask: how do we navigate the gap between knowledge and speculation? In what ways do scientific causality and technological progress infiltrate our everyday lives?

This project was initiated after an online news article cited a NASA statement claiming that “Asteroid 2009 FJ1 will impact Earth on 6 May 2022.” An intriguing way to deliver the most dire forecast in human history, I believe. Such headlines have appeared multiple times over the years, but we have not really stopped to consider their significance. Why? Perhaps it is because we do not understand the nature of this scientific discipline and therefore do not analyse the information presented, or because we ignore the uncertainty of the future, or because we no longer trust what the newspapers say. Or maybe nothing surprises us anymore. There may be more pressing humanitarian issues, or we doubt that such events could actually happen. We do not know if the information is guaranteed to be true.

At this point, it is interesting to explore the ambiguous limits between truth and fiction, reality and representation, and the role of the media in constructing reality. And my aim with initiating this research was not intended to represent truth, but rather to play with the supposed superiority of truth over fiction and allow it to exist beyond the realm of the verifiable.
