Der Greif has invited internationally celebrated conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas, supported by Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung, to guest-edit Issue 18.
Under the theme “TOMORROW IS TODAY”, this issue confronts the “now” to shape a conscious future. What if tomorrow were already here? What if today was our last chance to choose love over hate, action over apathy, community over chaos?
We invited image makers, visual storytellers, and artists from all over the world to respond to this fierce urgency of now — a time when delay is dangerous and inaction risks the loss of possibility. Inspired by the final published words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Issue 18 asks: Can we live the future we hope for – today?
Artists from across the globe answered this call, and Hank Willis Thomas has selected the works shown in this issue. Together, they form a powerful record of a moment defined by courage, clarity, and care.
Issue 18 will be released on November 8, 2025 – secure your copy now for the pre-order price of 16 € instead of the regular 19 €. The discount will be applied automatically during checkout.
Hank Willis Thomas was born in 1976 in Plainfield, New Jersey. He lives and works in Brooklyn.
Thomas is a conceptual artist whose work explores how mass media, advertising, and popular culture shape our understanding of race, identity, and history. Working across photography, sculpture, installation, and public art, he reframes familiar images to reveal hidden narratives. Notable projects include B®anded, Unbranded, and the large-scale public art commission The Embrace (2023) on Boston Common.
His work has been exhibited globally, including the International Center of Photography, Crystal Bridges, Henry Art Gallery, and is held in the collections of the Guggenheim, Whitney, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, among many others. He is a co-founder of For Freedoms and has received honors such as the Guggenheim Fellowship and the U.S. State Department Medal of Arts (2023).
