The Encounter With Art Books and Other Mediums as Inspiration

Artist Blog by Anna Charlotte Schmid

In addition to classics like Alec Soth, Nan Goldin, and Diane Arbus, I am also inspired by other works. I believe it is incredibly valuable for other artists when someone shares their inspirations - though it should be noted that my current motivation for visual narratives lacks a particularly personal influence from my list here, namely the works of the living Belgian painter Michaël Borremans.

  1. A small excerpt from my library, nicely arranged
  2. Faces from Hirmer Verlag, including photographs by Helmar Lerski, on a stack of books
  3. Andrzej Steinbach by Spector Books
  4. My one and only Paul Mpagi Sepuya, whom I met during the exhibition ‘I Am a Camera’ at FOTOFEST HOUSTON in 2015. I say hi!
  5. From the film Fase, 2002 by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker (choreography); seen at Centre Pompidou-Metz
